World Cup heroics result in ranking increases

Morocco and Australia see significant increases, while Argentina narrowly misses out on first place in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

A thrilling FIFA World CupTM has left a significant imprint on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, with several of the tournament's surprise packages rocketing to the top of the global rankings.

Morocco (11th, up 11) and Australia (27th, up 11) are among the top climbers in the latest edition, with the Atlas Lions also earning the title of 'Mover of the Year,' having won more points (142) than any other team since the end of 2021. The Moroccans have reached their highest ranking since April 1998.

Cameroon (33rd, up 10) benefited from positive results in Qatar, as did Croatia (7th, up 5) and Japan (20th, up 4), while teams that fell short of expectations, such as Denmark (18th, down 8) and Belgium (4th, down 2), should expect to fall down the rankings.

Argentina (2nd, up 1) moves up but misses out on first place by the tiniest of margins. Only two points separated La Albiceleste from old rivals Brazil (1st, unchanged), and had they been able to hold on to that 2-0 lead and defeat France in normal time, Lionel Scaloni's side would be in first place right now.

Of course, the title of world champions will provide ample consolation, and with the top two separated by such a narrow margin, the upcoming editions of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be well worth following.

On April 6, 2023, the next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be released.
